FUN WEEK!

Spring is here and In Concert Audio has a busy week!  Thursday we will be working with two amazing organizations, Casita Maria and City Lore in the South Bronx to celebrate Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education.

This event highlights the South Bronx’s cultural legacy and aims to ignite a cultural renaissance by honoring, showcasing, and promoting its legendary artists; nurturing the next generation of artists; and engaging younger generations and the public at large with the astounding cultural history of the South Bronx. There will be food and dancing to a live band including Bobby Sanabria and featuring Casita Maria alumni like Orlando Marín and Angel Rodríguez. Also on hand will be another alumnus, legendary DJ Grandwizzard Theodore.

In Concert Audio will be providing sound system, lighting, and back line equipment for this event.  Should be a fun night, stay tune next week for a full review of the event.

Saturday In Concert Audio will be providing sound for the Relay For Life at NYU’s Coles Gym in Greenwich Village in Manhattan.  An annual event we do with one of our long standing clients The American Cancer Society.  Sunday kicks off Riverside Fund’s annual spring Overlook Concert series in Riverside Park.  Marie and I will be there setting up the sound for the wind ensemble, more details on the flyer below.  Hope to see you there!

Also on Sunday Don will be at Town Hall stage managing for a very special show with Marcel Khalife for Alwan for the Arts.

Upcoming Shows

This week In Concert Audio will be providing a sound system for some of the most legendary musicians of blues and jazz, The Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, at the Van Dyke Community Center in Brownsville, Brooklyn.  This show, produced by Circuit Productions, Inc. and Council Member Darlene Mealy is free to the public.  See flyer for more details. Later in the week In Concert Audio will be in the Bronx at Horace Mann School for their annual a cappella contest.  This will be our third year providing sound system, lights, and a live recording of the event.  Next week we will be working with an organization called Casita Maria and have our annual relay for life with the American Cancer Society.  Stay tuned for more info on those shows.

After Party with Bobby Sanabria

We recently provided the sound system for the after party of the This Side of Paradise art exhibit and opening.

This event was produced by an organization called No Longer Empty, whose core mission is to widen the audience for contemporary art by presenting high-caliber, site-specific public art exhibitions in the heart of communities. No Longer Empty draws together the vitality of the contemporary art world and the values of building community. This event opened the old Andrew Freedman Home in The Bronx with an art exhibit, food, drinks, music and dance.

Latin Jazz drummer and band leader Bobby Sanabria brought his band to the event and put on two great sets, blending salsa, meringue, jazz, and swing. A native of The Bronx Bobby really knew how to keep the crowd dancing.

Here’s a short video of the party in full swing…. Bobby Sanabria Plays No Longer Empty After Party

It was a great party, but making sure the sound was on point was not necessarily easy. Old buildings in NYC usually mean unreliable power. In preparation for the show we asked the client to provide us with two 20 amp circuits. One to power the main speakers and power amps, and the other to power the six wedges used for monitors, and power for the bass amp, and keyboard amp. The client decided to place a generator outside for us to ensure that there would not be any power issues. This was great because when we got there and saw the ancient breaker box in the room we were relieved the client, although on a very tight budget, was able to secure us a generator. However, when we got to the point where we were ready to test the generator it didn’t work. For whatever reason the generator needed servicing and we were forced to draw power from the wall. Good thing Don Jacobs has 30 years experience working in old buildings in NYC. Our first instinct was to not turn on the subs. However, once Don was able to set his gain structure to a point that the levels on the mixer never went into the yellow we were able to use the extra power overhead to turn on the subs. In the end it worked out and the band sounded great, even though the room was boxy and boomy. Once again this proves that you have to be ready for anything in live audio, and you have the skills to improvise when necessary.

For the sound system we used four 2″X12″ passive Grundt tops powered with a Crown XTi 4000 amp. For the bottom we used two double 10″ Yorkville self powered subwoofers. At front of house Don worked the 24 channel digital Presonus Studio Live mixer. Don was also mixing five monitor mixes from front of house. All was done with a very short sound check, and not a bit of feedback during the show.

Party with Arcade44 a Success

In Concert Audio did a collaboration with website Arcade44 in honor of CMJ at The Bowery Hotel in NYC on October 21, 2010.  The event was a complete success with a healthy turn out and a great sounding system. We used 8 EAW KF300 for the P.A. 4 in the front and 4 delayed about half way through the space (see photos below).  For sub woofers we used 2 Yorkville double 10″. We chose the smaller subs over the single 18″ subs we use, because the space is a hotel and low frequencies are the majority of the noise complaints.  Those subs were perfect and always surprise me with their efficiency.  We used Audix OM-5′s for all vocals.  We did a simple stage wash with 8 LED par cans, and 2 LED punches for back lighting on the wall behind the stage to add a little color.  Check out this video on our youtube account of the band Motel Motel performing.

Don’s dream came true…

We finally got some scaffolding.  So now we can build large platforms to put speakers on when we build big sound systems…
